Volunteer Lawyers Prepare Wills for First Responders

EDISON - The Young Lawyers Division of the New Jersey State Bar Association and Wills for Heroes Foundation are teaming up to prepare wills for members of Edison First Aid Squad on Saturday.

“Many of our first responders are in need of wills. They risk their lives every day for our protection without having the peace of mind and protection for their own families through a valid will,” said Kimberly Yonta Aronow, chair of the Young Lawyers Division.

Nearly two dozen attorneys are expected to help create estate-planning documents for roughly 40 first responders from the Edison First Aid Squad and surrounding communities.

The event starts at 10 a.m. and goes until 3 p.m. at the Edison First Aid Squad #2, 848 New Dover Road, Edison.

The Wills for Heroes Foundation is a national organization that offers estate planning documents free of charge to first responders. The Foundation has successfully teamed with the American Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division and various other state bar associations to create local Wills for Heroes programs. It was created after September 11, 2001, when thousands of first responders risked their lives, and more than 400 firefighters and police officers died. Many first responders do not have estate plans. Through Wills For Heroes, over 7,000 estate-planning documents have been prepared for first responders across the country.
