NJSBA Nominating Committee Seeks Candidates for Leadership Positions

The New Jersey State Bar Association’s Nominating Committee invites members to apply for the following positions, which will be open in May 2009.

NJSBA Officers: The one-year term positions of President-Elect, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary.

NJSBA Board of Trustees: The following positions will also be open for nomination:

County Trustees: Atlantic, Camden, Cape May, Essex, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, Somerset, Sussex, Union;

At-Large Trustees: Two seats;

Section/Committee Trustees: Four seats;

Young Lawyers Division Trustee: One seat;

Nominating Committee: One seat;

ABA House of Delegates: Three seats, one designated for a young lawyer.

Criteria: The Nominating Committee will use the following criteria to evaluate all candidates interested in any of the available positions:

Adherence to the highest standards of fairness, professional responsibility, civility and professionalism;

The quality of prior service to the organized Bar;

Prior or present leadership positions and degree of effectiveness in these positions;

Dedication, capacity for hard work, and ability to fulfill all relevant duties without undue burden on the candidate’s practice or, indeed, on that candidate or his or her family;

Awareness of the NJSBA’s internal structure, in particular the duties for the position sought;

Demonstrated ability to synthesize and understand extensive quantities of information;

Demonstrated common sense, good judgment and the ability to articulate positions intelligently;

Especially for officer positions, demonstrated administrative capability and experience; and

Recognition and understanding of the essential issues facing the organized Bar, the profession, and capacity to lead in a creative, responsible fashion.

Additional criteria for specific positions are dictated by the NJSBA bylaws, as follows:

County Trustees: Shall either reside in or maintain an office in that county. Article III, 8(d)

At-Large Trustees: Shall represent segments of the membership not adequately represented on the Board of Trustees. Article III, 8(f)

Section/Committee Trustees: Are elected from among the membership of NJSBA Sections and Committees. No more than one Section/Committee Trustee shall be a member of the governing body of the same Section and no more than two Section/Committee Trustees shall be from the same county. Article III, 8(e)

Young Lawyers Division Trustee: Must be a member of the Young Lawyers Division. Article III, 8(c)

Nominating Committee: Candidates from Essex, Morris or Monmouth Counties are ineligible for consideration, and a new member will be elected by the General Council on October 17, 2008, rendering one other county ineligible. No more than one member of the Association from any one county or the governing body of any one Section or Division shall be a member of the Nominating Committee. Article IV, 2

ABA Delegates: The selection of Delegates must be consistent with the constitution, bylaws and rules of the American Bar Association. The Young Lawyer Delegate must be filled by a member who is under 35 years of age. Delegates must be available to participate in the Annual and Mid-Year Meetings of the ABA. Article III, 16

Filing Deadline: In order for each candidate to qualify for consideration by the Nominating Committee, his or her letter of intention for the elective position sought should be received by the Committee no later than 12:00 p.m., Friday, October 24, 2008. To facilitate a response, we ask that candidates include an email address, if available, in their letter of intent. All letters should be directed to:

Deadline for Candidate Questionnaire and Candidate Endorsement Letters: Please note that the Nominating Committee has established 12:00 p.m., Friday, December 5, 2008 as the deadline for submission of both the candidate questionnaire (which will be distributed to all candidates following receipt of letter of intention) and letters of endorsement.
