NJSBA Nominating Committee Seeks Candidates for Vancancies

The New Jersey State Bar Association’s Nominating Committee invites members to apply for the following vacancies:

Essex County Trustee to the NJSBA Board of Trustees: This seat must be filled by an NJSBA member who either resides or maintains an office in Essex County (see bylaws provision below). The term is from time of nomination until May of 2009, at which time candidate may seek re-nomination.

Hunterdon County Trustee to the NJSBA Board of Trustees: This seat must be filled by an NJSBA member who either resides or maintains an office in Hunterdon County (see bylaws provision below). The term is from time of nomination until May of 2009, at which time candidate may seek re-nomination.

ABA YLD Delegate: This seat must be filled by an NJSBA member who is less than 35 years of age. This position will fill an unexpired term ending in August of 2009. The candidate must be available to participate at the ABA’s 2009 Mid-Year and Annual Meetings.

Pursuant to Article III 8(d) of the NJSBA Bylaws states as follows:

Article III, 8(d): Every County Trustee shall be elected from, among and by the members of the Association from that county and, at the time of election, shall either reside in or maintain an office in that county, provided however, this provision shall have no application to Trustees in office at the time this amendment is adopted, including all consecutive terms thereof.

Criteria: The Nominating Committee will use the following criteria to evaluate all candidates interested in any of the available positions:

Adherence to the highest standards of fairness, professional responsibility, civility and professionalism;

The quality of prior service to the organized Bar;

Prior or present leadership positions and degree of effectiveness in these positions;

Dedication, capacity for hard work, and ability to fulfill all relevant duties without undue burden on the candidate’s practice or, indeed, on that candidate or his or her family;

Awareness of the NJSBA’s internal structure, in particular the duties for the position sought;

Demonstrated ability to synthesize and understand extensive quantities of information;

Demonstrated common sense, good judgment and the ability to articulate positions intelligently;

Recognition and understanding of the essential issues facing the organized Bar, the profession, and capacity to lead in a creative, responsible fashion;

The extent of practice in the State of New Jersey including but not limited to government and corporate service and;

The goal of bringing into the Association’s leadership broad and diverse representation of all segments of the Bar.

Filing Deadline: In order for candidates to qualify for consideration by the Nominating Committee, they should send a letter of intention and resume with optional letters of recommendation. Each letter of intention for the position sought should be received by the committee no later than 5:00 p.m., Friday, September 12, 2008. Candidates should also include an e-mail address, if available, in their letter of intent to assist the Nominating Committee's response. All letters should be directed to:
