Richard H. Steen Receives Distinguished Service Award from Institute for Continuing Legal Education
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Richard H. Steen, a member of Richard H. Steen, LLC, Attorneys at Law, in Mercer County, was honored with the 2006 Distinguished Service Award at the prestigious Clapp Awards ceremony of the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education (ICLE) on June 5 at the New Jersey Law Center. The Clapp Awards are an annual event held in recognition of outstanding contributions to continuing legal education and are named for the late Judge Alfred C. Clapp.
Mr. Steen is Treasurer of the New Jersey State Bar Association and serves on the Board of the State Bar Foundation. He is a past chair of the association's Construction and Public Contract Law Section, and was founding chair of the Dispute Resolution Section. He is the recipient of the association's 1998-1999 ADR Practitioner of the Year Award and 2002 Distinguished Legislative Service Award.
Mr. Steen is also is a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Mediator Standards and Arbitration Advisory Committee, and he serves as chair of the Administration Subcommittee of the Supreme Court Standing Committee on Complementary Dispute Resolution.
Mr. Steen is a Master and Past President of the Justice Marie L. Garibaldi American Inn of Court for Alternative Dispute Resolution, chairs the ADR Committee of the New Jersey Corporate Counsel Association, is a member of the Dispute Avoidance and Resolution Steering Committee of the ABA Forum on the Construction Industry, and chairs the American Arbitration Association's New Jersey Construction Advisory Council.
A frequent lecturer for ICLE and many other organizations on construction law, dispute management and alternative dispute resolution, Mr. Steen is the author of numerous papers and articles on those topics. He is a graduate of Drexel University and Seton Hall Law School where he was a founding director of the Seton Hall Legislative Bureau and the first editor-in-chief of the Seton Hall Legislative Journal. His practice includes engineering and construction law, complex commercial disputes, environmental law and alternative dispute resolution.
While serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Institute for Practicing Lawyers, Judge Alfred C. Clapp was instrumental in founding ICLE as New Jersey's major vehicle for providing continuing legal education to the State's bench and bar. Judge Clapp was a name partner in the law firm of Clapp and Eisenberg, former Dean of Rutgers University Law School, author of the Wills and Administration volumes of West's New Jersey Practice Series, editor of the New Jersey Law Journal, Presiding Judge of the Appellate Division of the New Jersey Superior Court, and New Jersey State Senator. This annual award serves as a continuing remembrance of his efforts in setting the standard for excellence in continuing legal education.
The New Jersey State Bar Association, incorporated in 1899, is dedicated to the continuing education of lawyers and the public, to reforming and improving the legal system and to aiding in the administration of justice.
