Richard H. Steen Named Secretary of the New Jersey State Bar Association
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ–Richard H. Steen, a Lawrenceville resident and Princeton attorney, was installed as secretary of the New Jersey State Bar Association (NJSBA) on May 19 at the organization’s annual meeting in Atlantic City. This installation puts Steen on track to assume the presidency of the NJSBA in 2010. He also serves as trustee for the New Jersey State Bar Foundation, the NJSBA’s philanthropic arm.
Steen has been a member of the NJSBA for 28 years and served on the Board of Trustees as a Section/Committee Trustee from 1998 to 2004. He is the founding chair of the association’s Dispute Resolution Section and received the ADR Practitioner of the Year Award from the section in 1998-1999. Steen was recognized with the Distinguished Legislative Service Award of the New Jersey State Bar Association in July 2002 for his efforts in drafting the Revised Uniform Arbitration Act, which was signed into law in July 2003.
Steen is a former chair of the NJSBA Legislative Committee, Construction and Public Contract Law Section and Special Committee on Dispute Resolution. He is currently chair of the Task Force on Medical Malpractice.
A member of the New Jersey Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Mediator Standards, Steen also serves as chair of the Administration Subcommittee of the Supreme Court Standing Committee on Complementary Dispute Resolution. In addition, he is a member of the Court’s Arbitration Advisory Committee.
Steen has more than 25 years experience in all aspects of construction law and the resolution of complex construction disputes. He has been involved in the assertion or defense of numerous substantial construction claims in state and federal court, and has served as an arbitrator or mediator in hundreds of ADR proceedings.
Within the American Arbitration Association, Steen is a member of the National Roster of Neutrals, National Construction Mediation Roster, National Construction and Commercial Arbitrator Training Faculty, Construction Arbitrator Master Panel, Large Complex Case Panel and New Jersey Public Sector Construction Panel. In addition, he serves as chair of the New Jersey Construction Advisory Council and is a partnering facilitator.
As a member of the American Bar Association, Steen serves as co-chair of the Construction Litigation Subcommittee of the ADR Committee for the Litigation Section. He is a member of the Forum on the Construction Industry, Division I Steering Committee and also a member of the Ethical Standards for Mediation Task Force.
Steen is a President and Master of the Justice Marie L. Garibaldi American Inn of Court for Alternative Dispute Resolution. He serves the New Jersey Corporate Counsel Association as chair of the ADR Committee and is a former director for the association. Steen holds memberships in the Construction Management Association of America, the Mercer County Bar Association and the New Jersey Institute of Municipal Attorneys.
Active within his community, Steen is a member of the Lawrence Township Municipal Court Mediation Committee and is a Deacon/former President, Trustee and Elder of the Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church.
A graduate of Seton Hall University School of Law, Steen was a founding director of the Seton Hall Legislative Bureau and the first editor-in-chief of the Seton Hall Legislative Journal. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in commerce and engineering sciences from Drexel University. His law firm, Richard H. Steen, LLC, is located in Princeton, New Jersey.
The New Jersey State Bar Association, incorporated in 1899, is dedicated to the continuing education of lawyers and the public, to reforming and improving the legal system and to aiding in the administration of justice.
