Resignation of Associate Justice Peter G. Verniero
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Karol Corbin Walker, President of the New Jersey State Bar Association, issued the following statement in connection with the resignation of Associate Justice Peter G. Verniero from the Supreme Court of New Jersey:
"The decision by Associate Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court Peter Verniero to resign from the bench effective August 31, 2004 comes as a complete surprise. In the four years since his appointment, Justice Verniero has created an impressive body of law, averaging over 25 opinions per year, 58 of which were majority opinions. It is to his great credit that Justice Verniero was able to so quickly earn the respect of his colleagues on the bench.
It is no secret that the New Jersey State Bar Association was once critical of his initial appointment because of his then lack of experience. However, he has grown in his position. His scholarship is now manifest, and he has dedicated himself to working with both the NJSBA and local bar associations to improve the system of justice in New Jersey. On behalf of the State Bar, I wish Justice Verniero success in all of his future endeavors."
The New Jersey State Bar Association, incorporated in 1899, is dedicated to the continuing education of lawyers and the public, to reforming and improving the legal system and to aiding in the administration of justice.
