NJSBA Responds to Court Announcement the Backlogs are at Historic Low
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ— New Jersey State Bar Association President Karol Corbin Walker issued the following response to the announcement by the New Jersey Judiciary that progress continues in resolving cases quickly and that backlogs are at a historical low.
“We are pleased with the reduction in court backlogs and congratulate the judiciary on this notable achievement. Efficiency in the courts and the ability to achieve a speedy resolution is good for litigants and serves the interests of justice.
We caution, however, that a backlog should not be the sole objective of the judiciary. The delivery of justice should be the most important component of the administration of justice. The NJSBA maintains that flexibility and judicial discretion are necessary to provide not only access to the courts, but a just result.”
Yesterday, the judiciary released its New Jersey Judiciary Court Management Report that shows the lowest backlog totals since 1980. The report indicates that 87 percent of all pending New Jersey court cases are now within expected time goals for resolution assigned by the judiciary.
The New Jersey State Bar Association, incorporated in 1899, is dedicated to the continuing education of lawyers and the public, to reforming and improving the legal system and to aiding in the administration of justice.
