Commissioner Bakke Recognized For ADR Work With Boskey Award
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Holly Bakke, New Jersey’s Banking and Insurance commissioner, was recently honored by the NJSBA Dispute Resolution Section with the group’s annual James B. Boskey Award at the organization’s annual meeting in Atlantic City. A former chair of the NJSBA Dispute Resolution Committee, Bakke also served as chair of the Judicial Administration Committee.
“Holly is a tireless advocate for alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and her commitment to finding alternate ways of solving disputes has made her innovative,” said Suzanne M. McSorley, immediate past chair of the Dispute Resolution Section.
“Her way of resolving disputes rather than by litigating them is one of the real strengths she brings to her job as commissioner of Banking and Insurance. That kind of world view is a great help in finding a path through the myriad of issues that she will need to deal with as commissioner.”
Noting that Bakke is a great choice for the Boskey Award, Richard H. Steen, NJSBA trustee and liaison to the section added that she has maintained an interest in ADR since her days as chair of the Dispute Resolution Committee prior to the group’s achieving section status.
“Because of her tireless efforts and commitment to educate the bench, the bar and the public about ADR, and to encourage the expansion of the use of ADR, she has a special place in the New Jersey ADR community,” he said.
Since 1989, Bakke has served as executive director of the New Jersey Property-Liability Insurance Guaranty Association, the New Jersey Surplus Lines Insurance Guaranty Fund, and the New Jersey Medical Malpractice Reinsurance Association. Prior to that, she served as Deputy Commissioner of Insurance Litigation Practices for the New Jersey Department of Insurance. Bakke has also served on several Supreme Court Committees dealing with criminal practice, civil litigation and complementary dispute resolution.
“Holly really introduced the Property-Liability Insurance Guaranty Association to using ADR,” said McSorley. “She knows how to connect with people. She’s a great teacher and a great friend. She’s a wonderful person to get the award this year.”
The Boskey Award is presented in recognition of achievements in informing and educating the public about alternative and complementary dispute resolution techniques; encouraging and promoting reform and modernization of the legal system; improving the relationship between the legal profession and the general public; exemplifying the goals and purposes of the Dispute Resolution Section; and for service to the residents of the state of New Jersey.
The New Jersey State Bar Association, incorporated in 1899, is dedicated to the continuing education of lawyers and the public, to reforming and improving the legal system and to aiding in the administration of justice.
