Legal community unites for Day of Service
Judiciary, State Bar, County Bar, Specialty Bar Groups Honor 10th Anniversary of Sept. 11
The New Jersey State Bar Association, New Jersey Judiciary and county and specialty bar associations around the state will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a Day of Service.
The Judiciary has set aside rooms around the state where volunteer lawyers will provide educational and consultation services to individuals and families whose lives were touched by the attacks, including first responders, veterans, as well as members of the public. In addition, many courthouses have reserved space for quiet reflection throughout the day.
“We are pleased to work with the Bar Association to dedicate a Day of Service in memory of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11. In communities throughout the State, attorneys will gather to volunteer their time and skill. By doing so, they will not only help others, but also demonstrate their commitment to the rule of law,” said Chief Justice Stuart Rabner.
All Day of service events will be held Monday, Sept. 12, and are free and open to the public.
“At no time was our profession's dedication to service more in evidence than in the days and months following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks of nearly 10 years ago,” said NJSBA President Susan A. Feeney. “In the decade since that terrible day, much has changed about the way we go about our daily lives, but at least one thing has remained constant -- our profession and this association’s dedication to honoring the memory of those who gave their lives, recognizing the heroes who emerged from that tragedy, and the importance of giving back to our community.”
Day of Service projects will vary in each community, from educational sessions where volunteer attorneys will discuss critical areas of the law from family matters to forfeiture and answer questions from audience members, to free 15-minute consultations with volunteer attorneys who can answer questions about the legal rights of all residents.
