May 16, 2012
The following is a summary of actions taken at the May 16, 2012, meeting of the New Jersey State Bar Association Board of Trustees at the Annual Meeting and Convention at The Borgata in Atlantic City. This summary does not constitute official minutes.
Filing fees: Incoming President Kevin P. McCann reported on a meeting held with Senate President Sweeney regarding the filing fee legislation. The existing bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Peter Barnes, is not expected to receive a Senate vote. Instead, new legislation is anticipated, and will be introduced shortly. That measure will provide funding for e-courts and Legal Services of New Jersey, but will remove funding for Executive Branch items. It is also expected to provide a means to adjust court fees if IOLTA’s financial picture improves.
Pro Bono Task Force: With the aim to increase private bar attorney involvement in pro bono, the New Jersey State Bar Association’s governing body supported a report from a task force that studied the issue for a year. The Board of Trustees said the report should be circulated to various state bar association groups for further input, and an ad hoc committee should be created to continue the examination and implementation effort.
Government affairs: The trustees supported a proposed constitutional amendment that would increase the mandatory retirement age of judges and justices from 70 to 75, and they opposed a pending bill that would provide civil immunity for some volunteer doctors who work at nonprofit clinics and federally qualified health centers.
Member benefits: The board approved a new benefit that gives members a discount on online records management solutions through InfoStore.
Trustee recognition: The trustees welcomed several new members to the Board. The new trustees are: Supti Bhattacharya, Anthony Carlino, Edward Hoffman, Shanna McCann, Brandon Minde, Michael Selvaggi, Michael Testa Jr., and Ronald Uzdavinis.
The Board also approved the candidates the Nominating Committee selected to fill two seats that became vacant when trustees moved on to other positions. Stephen W. Barry, of Barry, Corrado & Grassi PC, in Wildwood, will replace J. Christopher Gibson, who is now a state Superior Court judge, as the trustee from Cape May County. And Joan Burke, a deputy attorney general with the state Division of Criminal Justice, was selected to fill a seat designated for a representative of a state bar association section or committee, which had been filled by Thomas Hoff Prol, who was sworn-in as state bar secretary. Burke is a co-chair of the Diversity Committee.
