Following is a summary of actions taken at the October 17, 2008 meeting of the New Jersey State Bar Association Board of Trustees at the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick. This summary does not constitute official minutes.
Nominating Committee
The Board approved the Nominating Committee recommendations for current vacant positions, including the Essex and Hunterdon County Trustees on the Board of Trustees and the YLD Delegate to the American Bar Association. David B. Wolfe was named ABA YLD Delegate, Gary Potters the Essex County Trustee, and Franklin G. Whittlesey as Hunterdon County Trustee.
JPAC Compact
Governor Jon Corzine has signed the new NJSBA Judicial and Prosecutorial Appointments Committee compact with the amendment that now requires that county bar JPAC members comply with the same procedural rules as the State Bar JPAC members.
Military Law and Veterans' Affairs Committee
The Board approved section status for the Military Law and Veterans' Affairs Committee. In addition, the NJSBA Military Law and Veterans' Affairs Committee had several members appear on a cable access program on Sept. 9 to discuss the Military Legal Assistance Program. The participants included former committee chair Sanford Rader, Michael Pasquale from McCarter and English, and NJSBA Trustee Frank Hoerst.
Rule of Law Conference
The NJSBA is working to produce a "Rule of Law Conference" following the American Bar Association model for such a program. The Conference will be held in March 2009 and will feature an opportunity for lawyers, educators and the general public to come together to discuss issues of mutual concern regarding the rule of law in American society.
Meeting Arrangements and Program Committee
Arrangements are being finalized for the 2009 Mid-Year Meeting in San Francisco, which will be held at the St. Regis San Francisco from November 3-8, 2009. In addition, arrangements for the 2010 meeting at the Four Seasons in Scottsdale are also being finalized.
Law Office Management Committee
The Board approved the revised committee charge for the Law Office Management Committee that better reflects the committee's work and purpose.
Criminal Law Section Program
The Board approved for the Criminal Law Section to open registration to all NJSBA members and non-member attorneys for the Nov. 19 section meeting where Richard (Richie) Roberts will be the guest speaker. The meeting will be limited to the first 100 registrants.
Government Relations
NJSBA 2008-04 - Alternate Names for Professional Service Corporations
The Board of Trustees voted to support, high priority.
NJSBA 2008-06 - Uniform Adult Guardianship and Protective Proceedings Jurisdiction Act
The Board of Trustees voted to support, high priority.
A-746 (Prieto) - Requires court, prior to granting a domestic violence victim's application to dissolve restraining order, to make a finding that the application was made voluntarily.
The Board of Trustees voted to support with amendments, moderate priority.
