Law Day 2002 was an historic one for the NJSBA. It marked the official signing and reaffirmation of the Judicial Compact between the Governor's Office and the State Bar Association.

NJSBA Response to the Pollock Commission and Wallace Committee Reports - April 2003

The New Jersey State Bar Association issued its response to the reports of the Pollock Commission and Wallace Committee.

The primary recommendations of the Pollock commission report are:

A. elimination of the bona fide office rule, but the requirement that there be an office in some state;
B. elimination of the appearance of impropriety rule;
C. allowing law firms wider use of screening to address conflicts caused by lateral hires;
D. MJP rule;
E. revisions to advertising rule dropping prohibitions against drawings, animation, music or lyrics.

The Wallace Report has some far reaching recommendations, among them:

A. allowing admission to the bar on motion for lawyers from "reciprocal states" that have practiced for 5 of the previous 7 years;
B. allowing foreign educated lawyers to take bar exam;
C. permitting in-house counsel to obtain a "limited license" to practice solely for their employer;
D. MJP rule;
E. elimination of bona fide office rule (same as Pollock).

The bench and the bar are inextricably linked as stakeholders in New Jersey's judicial system. This report is intended to represent one more step toward positive interaction between the bench and bar. Judicial Selection Report - May 2001

The NJSBA's report, IMPROVING THE JUDICIAL SELECTION PROCESS, recommends that greater bar and public participation occur in the identification and selection of judicial candidates.

Reinstatement of Disbarred Lawyers - March 2001

The New Jersey State Bar Association submits to the Supreme Court a report that recommends the adoption of rules permitting disbarred lawyers to apply for reinstatement to practice. The report was adopted by unanimous vote of the NJSBA Board of Trustees on March 9, 2001.
