Picking Up Tips for Our Personal, as Well as Professional Lives

By Sharon A. Balsamo

My husband, who is also an attorney, got a little nervous when I suggested he attend the program titled, "Divorce and the Special Needs Child" on Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday morning, when they began talking about considerations for special needs children in the context of divorce at the program titled, "What All Attorneys Need to Know About Public benefits" he leaned over to me and asked, "Are you trying to tell me something?" Well, I was, but not what he thought. You see, we have a developmentally delayed daughter who is a tremendously special little girl, but who also has tremendous special needs. And, while those two programs were geared to educate attorneys about helping their clients in the context of a legal case, they also educated my husband and I about helping our daughter in our everyday lives. Navigating the maze of medicare, medicaid, ssi, ddd, early intervention, special education, special needs trusts, supplemental trusts, pooled trusts, and a whole host of other things can be quite tricky and get confusing very quickly. So, why not earn cle credits while also learning about things that could assist us personally and, hopefully, make the future more stable for our daughter? That's all I was trying to say. And, as it turns out, we did pick up a few tidbits about tools and programs and resources that may be available that we have nto yet tapped into. So, kudos to the speakers at both programs, and thank you for the valuable information! And, one more thing I learned today -- New Jersey is home to 10% of all of the certified elder law attorneys in the nation. 10% in the nation! So, when all else fails, help is only a phone call (and probably retainer agreement) away.
