The Practice of Law in a Time of War: Duty-Bound to Our Returning Soldiers

This October marks the eighth year of our country being at war in Afghanistan and Iraq. With deployment numbers not seen since World War II, these wars are part of the daily lives of thousands of our soldiers and their families. Many of the U.S. forces deployed have been called to active duty and separated from their families, homes and civilian careers for over two years. When they return, often injured, they face not only a crippled economy, but challenges that involve multiple areas of law relating to their disabilities, family issues, re-employment and creditor problems. This program will address these issues, including an overview of the laws already in place to protect our returning soldiers, the responsibilities of individual practitioners and the judiciary under those laws, and efforts to pass new legislation.

This year's NJSBA Golf Tournament will take place at historical Harding Park Golf Course. The course takes advantage of the property's existing topography, contours and vegetation. Predominant features include the towering Monterey Cypress trees and the nearby presence of Lake Merced. The addition of multiple teeing surfaces provides the course the flexibility to offer distinct playing characteristics that will challenge every golfer, from beginner to the most skilled player.

Alcatraz and Pier 39

Do "hard time" on Alcatraz Island Federal Penitentiary. Visit the main cellblock that once housed Al Capone and Robert "The Birdman" Stroud, and then take a step into solitary confinement for a feeling of real prison life! Echoing footsteps, cell doors closing and keys rattling can be heard while roaming the cold corridors. Once freed, lucky guests will ferry back to the mainland for a stop at San Francisco's most visited attraction, Pier 39, where they will also receive a Pier 39 Passport for shopping. Guests are welcome to stay at Pier 39 and arrange return transportation on their own.
