The NJSBA and its Pro Bono Committee have worked since 1993 to minimize mandatory pro bono assignments while maximizing voluntary pro bono service by attorneys. The NJSBA was the moving force behind the Municipal Public Defender Law, which eliminated mandatory pro bono assignments in municipal court that disserved both the public and the legal profession. It also was instrumental in the passage of the Adoption and Safe Families Act that provides funded legal representation for indigent parents in proceedings where the termination of their parental rights is at issue.
