Section and Committee Networking Opportunities

From dispute resolution, to workers' compensation, to children's' rights, the NJSBA has over 30 practice-oriented sections and more than 40 committees which represent a diverse spectrum of law, affording its members many career-building opportunities. For attorneys who are younger than 36 or have practiced for less than six years, the Young Lawyers Division provides New Jersey's newest lawyers with an opportunity to network and to enhance their professional development.

As a section or division member you will have the opportunity to:

  • Join online communities for networking and information.

All of the NJSBA's sections have developed online communities with calendars of events, meeting minute information, newsletters, section news, forums and email distributors. Section members can benefit by communicating in their substantive areas via the Internet. Questions can be posted to the section, legislative information can be updated, and important news can be accessed quickly. The ability to exchange information, news, events of interest and other items is a key component of the networking that section membership offers.

Section publications provide the latest substantive reports, case law analysis and developing trends. Newsletters like the New Jersey Family Lawyer and the Labor and Employment Law Quarterly, feature cutting-edge reports and articles, and are recognized as the premier publications in their fields.

As a section, committee or division member you will have the opportunity to:
  • Keep abreast of the latest developments in your practice area through seminars, workshops, newsletters and social and networking events.

Express your views and share experiences and knowledge with colleagues, network with attorneys who specialize in your area of law, and gain an insider's perspective into your field by participating in meetings and social events. These take place throughout the year often at the centrally located New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick. An excellent forum for discussion of timely issues relevant to your practice, meetings and seminars also give you the opportunity to meet with top professionals and recognized experts who share your concerns. Work side-by-side with colleagues dedicated to promoting innovative initiatives for the profession.

  • Receive valuable discounts for related ICLE programs.

Each year, NJSBA sections and committees cosponsor hundreds of educational seminars and panel discussions with the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education. YLD and Section members may deduct 25% from any co-sponsored ICLE program tuition. A 30% reduction is available to YLD members at programs cosponsored by the division.

  • Participate in the legislative process by reviewing pending legislation and assisting the leadership in recommending new laws or changing existing laws.

NJSBA sections and committees have successfully lobbied for the passage of legislation important to lawyers and their clients. You can lead the way in reform by drafting model acts and commenting on standards and procedures.

  • Attend the prestigious Annual and Mid-Year meetings.

Most sections and committees schedule programs at the Annual Meeting, which provide an excellent forum for discussion of timely issues relevant to your practice. The Mid-Year Meeting is an opportunity to meet your colleagues in a relaxed setting.

The NJSBA's special committees are dedicated to identifying, analyzing and resolving emerging legal issues and are the force behind many developments in the law. Each committee offers members the opportunity to meet and work with colleagues expert in the area of concentration and, when appropriate, with policy makers and regulators. Committee participation enables you to receive timely information on changes impacting your practice. The NJSBA President appoints all special committees with members serving one-year terms. To request an appointment to a special committee, please send a letter of interest to the President at the New Jersey Law Center.
