Dear Editor:
Recently, some physicians who are participating in the job action to stop routine medical care have boasted that their lobbying effort is the "800 pound gorilla." Unfortunately, this metaphor is most apt to describe bullies, those who fail to understand or appreciate reason.
Such rhetoric is precisely what is not needed during this crisis. What is needed is thoughtful analysis and reasoned discussion, involving not only doctors and lawyers, but insurance company representatives. I again repeat the call on behalf of the New Jersey State Bar Association for the appointment of a blue ribbon study commission that would be asked to come up with recommendations to address the current insurance crisis and prevent future problems.
Let's cut out the acrimony and bluster and begin a real examination of New Jersey's medical malpractice insurance situation. This is a complex problem that has developed over many years. It is not amenable to putative quick fixes, nor should it be. I call on the Medical Society of New Jersey to put down its protest signs and begin a meaningful dialogue that will serve its members and the public. The NJSBA stands ready to do the same.
Richard J. Badolato, Esq.
President, New Jersey State Bar Association
