NJSBA PENDING LEGISLATION

Criminal Law

A-2105 (Coughlin)/S-895 (Vitale) Clarifies that criminal impersonation committed by any means, including electronic communications or Internet website, shall be subject to criminal penalties. On Dec. 9, the bill was heard before the Senate Judiciary Committee. On Dec. 12, the bill was released from the Senate Judiciary Committee and is awaiting Senate vote. 

A-3692 (Burzichelli) Requires notification to crime witnesses of a defendant's release from custody under certain circumstances. On Dec. 5, the bill was transferred to the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, where it was released with committee amendments and is awaiting Senate vote.

S-2513 (Norcross) Expands notification when an offender is released from custody or transferred within the criminal justice system. On Dec. 5, the bill was released from the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee with amendments and is awaiting Senate vote. 

Consumer Protection Law

 A-1740 (Prieto) Regulates certain service contracts to perform maintenance, repair, replacement, or service of property used for personal, family, or household purposes. On Dec. 12, the bill was recommitted to the Assembly Budget Committee, released with amendments and is awaiting Assembly vote. 

A-2840 (Spencer)/S-455 (Turner) Prohibits employers from obtaining, requiring, or discriminating on the basis of credit reports. On Dec. 16, the bill was released from the Assembly Labor Committee with a committee substitute and is awaiting Assembly vote.

Judicial Administration

A-4363 (Cryan) Provides that the New Jersey Supreme Court shall have the authority to administer juror challenges through its rulemaking process. On Dec. 16, the bill was released from the Assembly Judiciary Committee and is awaiting Assembly vote.                             

Military and Veterans Affairs

A-1898 (Albano)/S-1075 (Van Drew) Extends the burial of indigent veterans to those who did not serve in time of war; clarifies the role of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs in identifying deceased veterans; provides additional funding for burial of indigent veterans. On Dec. 12, the bill was released from the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee with amendments and is awaiting Senate vote. 

Municipal Court Practice

A-3289 (Fuentes)/S-2710 (Ruiz) Creates the New Jersey Social Innovation Act; establishes a social innovation pilot program and study commission within the Economic Development Authority. On Dec. 9, the bill was heard before the Senate Economic Growth Committee. On Dec. 12, the bill was released from the Senate Economic Growth Committee with amendments and was referred to the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, where it is awaiting vote.

 Municipal Court Practice

S-3059 (Turner) Establishes that a payment plan for motor vehicle surcharges is mandatory upon request; extends payment period. On Dec. 16, the bill was released from the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee and referred to the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee.
